The City of Esposende

Belonging to the district of Braga, being the only county with connection to the ocean, it is located in the proximity of the cities of Viana do Castelo, Póvoa de Varzim, Barcelos and Braga.

Esposende is a city full of enviable heritage and an unmistakable nature, it can provide moments of great welcome for tourists and for the citizens themselves.

Considered by many visitors the Algarve in miniature, Esposende has to offer fantastic beaches, namely, those of Apulia, Ofir and Suave Mar.
It has an odd heritage, including the Castro de São Lourenço, the São João Batista Fort in the Foz do Cávado River, the Bonança Chapel in Fão, as well as the Municipal Museum of Esposende.

For lovers of sport and in regard to nautical activities, Esposende has the richest coasts to practice different modalities, especially kayaking and kite surfing.

The Gulosa Gastronomy delights all those who seek restoration, especially for its fish and seafood treatments of our seas and rivers, not forgetting the light, sweet and aromatic green wines of the farmhouse and the sweet little whistles of Fão.

What to see in Esposende

Natural Park of the north coast (Natural Park Litoral Norte) has an area of 440 hectares and extends over 18 km between the mouth of the Cávado River in Esposende and the Village of Apulia. It is one of the main bathing areas of the north coast of Portugal and has almost deserted beaches, bathed by crystal clear waters and white sand dunes dotted with vegetation. It is a protected natural area.

Castro S. Lourenço (Vila Chã)
The castro of S. Lourenço is a fortified settlement, in which were found vestiges that retreat to the century. IV a.C. Since the 16th century. II a.C. that the houses are being built all over the hill in levels. The excavated area showed the existence of housing nuclei, which are often surrounded by slabs. The defense was secured by three walls. At the end of the 19th century, I a.C. witnessed transformations that lasted until the 19th century. IV AD, with all the signs of Romanization.

After a period of abandonment Mount S. Lourenço is again occupied, around the century. XIV when it is erected a defensive system, type small castle.
In addition to the historical-archaeological aspect, Mount S. Lourenço is a place of rare beauty.

Maritime Museum of Esposende

This ancient building, situated on the seafront of the Cávado estuary, was recently recovered by the Forum Esposendense, a public institution founded in 1989 to promote reflection and study of the social, economic and cultural problems of the municipality. The building has several activities: museum (temporary exhibitions), auditorium, maritime library, Forum headquarters and writing a local magazine. It also continues to provide maritime rescue services (its original function).
